Discipline, Nature and Tradition Malay Women's Health and Beauty

Malay women are esteemed, among other things, for their beauty, their courteous manners and their refined disposition and demeanor. Although the endearing elegance of Malay women is, to a large extent, the product of their social, cultural and religious backgrounds, other aspects of their beauty are grounded in a vast body of herbal healing knowl- edge that is passed down through the generations. As outer beauty is a reflection of inner health, the idea of inner and outer wellness as a totality is particularly prevalent in Malay culture.

In Malaysia, a shining complexion and bright eyes, as well as a cultivated restraint in manner, are particularly praised; Malay women are brought up to be mild-mannered, courteous.

Health and Beauty Care

Traditionally, when a Malay girl starts to approach adulthood, she becomes the recipient of the wealth of herbal health knowledge that is stored, and sometimes documented, in the family. This knowledge comprises disciplines, rulings, remedies and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation and includes some of the famed Malay anti-aging secrets. This pre-puberty period is a time of great excitement for the teenager, as she is finally gaining entrance into a world that was previously closed to her.

Pre-Puberty Rituals

Leading up to puberty, a number of specialized routines are introduced into most girls' lives. These include a weekly hair care regime, a twice-weekly massage and a purifying bath where crushed guava leaves (Psidium guajava) are used for cleansing. To this end, guava trees were commonly planted near traditional Malay bathing areas; leaves were literally plucked and used fresh as and when needed.
